The World’s Fastest Radios, Created by Akash, Take Off into Space

On January 14, 2025, Akash Systems’s Diamond Cooled satellite radio achieved space heritage! It launched into space (LEO) with Pixxel, marking a significant milestone in the evolution of satellite communications and Earth observation.

Akash Systems: The Next Generation of Satellite Communications

Akash Systems pioneered GaN-on-Diamond, which led to the creation of Diamond Cooling, the most thermally conductive semiconductor in the world. For satellite radios, this breakthrough means unprecedented data transmission speeds. Our latest innovation – a palm-sized satellite radio – delivers data at an incredible 690 Mbps per 120 MHz channel, making it the fastest radio of its size. More recent satellite radios from Akash approach 1.5 Gbps over the full band.

Akash’s radio delivers:

  • High Efficiency: Akash's technology significantly reduces power consumption, with the radio consuming less than 28W DC during transmission while producing RF output power of 2-5W. This efficiency is crucial in space where energy is limited.
  • Unparalleled Thermal Management: By integrating synthetic diamond materials, known for their superior thermal conductivity, Akash addresses the challenge of heat dissipation in space satellites. Traditionally, around 70% of power is wasted as heat. This innovation enhances performance and reduces costs and size requirements for satellite systems.

Akash's focus on customization allows them to meet various customer needs, making their technology adaptable for applications ranging from Earth observation to telecommunications. It is currently available in X- and Ka-bands.

Pixxel: A Vision for Earth's Health

Pixxel, co-founded by Awais Ahmed and Kshitij Khandelwal, aims to create a "health monitor for the planet" through its constellation of hyperspectral satellites. Established during their university years at the Birla Institute of Technology and Science in India, Pixxel's mission is to provide comprehensive insights into Earth's ecosystems by capturing high-resolution imagery that can detect changes across industries such as environment, mining, oil and gas, agriculture, and more.

Mission Objectives

  • Earth Observation: Pixxel's satellites are designed to monitor environmental and other changes, helping governments and organizations make informed decisions regarding sustainability and conservation efforts.
  • Future Aspirations: Beyond Earth monitoring, Pixxel envisions expanding its technology to explore celestial bodies like asteroids and planets, contributing to humanity's understanding of space resources.

A Revolutionary Partnership

The collaboration between Akash Systems and Pixxel represents a transformative step forward for satellite technology. By integrating Akash's high-speed satellite radio with Pixxel's advanced Earth observation capabilities, this partnership aims to enhance data collection and transmission efficiency.

This launch not only showcases innovative technology but also emphasizes a shared commitment to sustainability and connectivity. As both companies work towards their respective goals—Akash in revolutionizing satellite communications and Pixxel in monitoring Earth's health—their combined efforts could lead to groundbreaking advancements in how we understand and interact with our planet and beyond.
